Our Story
From late weekends and even an A&E trip to what you see today
The Winston Arms was a pub that had humble beginnings. It was the brainchild of Darren, Katie, Martin, Matt Keo, Matt Mc, Phil, and Lucy – a group of friends who shared a love of beer and good times. They had always dreamed of opening their own bar in the heart of Campton, but they knew that it would be a challenge to do it on a shoestring budget.
Undeterred, they set to work on their project, using whatever materials they could find to create a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. They scoured secondhand online shops, facebook maketplace, and ebay, looking for old furniture, bar stools, and other items that they could use. They even visited other pubs, looking for inspiration and ideas.
Katie, in particular, had a knack for finding old stuff from other pubs. She discovered the old kegs, some vintage bar signs, and even an antique bar table that would become the centerpiece of the bar. With each new find, the group of friends grew more excited about their project.
Despite their limited budget, the group of friends poured their hearts and souls into their pub. They worked long hours over three weekends, sanding, painting, and decorating until they had created a space that they were proud of. They painted the walls black to hide any imperfections, but they also added personal touches that reflected their personalities and interests.
As they worked, the group of friends came up with a saying that would become their motto: “Between the Lines.” It was a reminder that they didn’t have to be perfect – they just had to stay between the lines. It was a reflection of their belief that the best things in life are often imperfect, but that they can still be beautiful and meaningful.
We would also like to thank Dean, Hannah, and Megan for their hard work in creating the new and improved pub bench. Their craftsmanship and attention to detail have resulted in a beautiful and functional piece of furniture that has become the main point of our pub.
Tom saw an opportunity to make something beautiful out of what others might consider trash. He cut down all the tree limbs and branches to give us an insane amount of bark, which we used to cover our dead grass. Now, our garden is the envy of the neighbourhood, and Tom is a bona fide gardening genius. Who knew that all we needed was a few tree limbs and a whole lot of bark to create a beautiful garden?
Today, The Winston Arms is a beloved gathering place, known for its friendly staff, great entertainment, and welcoming atmosphere. It may have been created on a budget, but it is rich in history and character, a testament to the power of friendship and the importance of pursuing your dreams.
